Feng Shui dates back to 3,000 years ago. It is founded on an
ancient Chinese belief that the forces of nature, specifically wind
and water, can shape and change the environment. The Chinese
believed in the oneness of all things and that the key to living a
well-organized life is reflected in the balance of nature in their
daily lives. This is best understood by these concepts: Yin and
Yang which is the balance between the masculine and the feminine
energy, Chi, which is the vital energy present in everything and
the five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal and water.
In ancient China Feng Shui was used mainly to plan the layout of
cities, villages, homes, and buildings. In today’s modern China
Feng Shui is still practiced. It is often used by the authorities
to plan new communities as well as banks, houses, and hotels.
Feng Shui is also used by many Chinese to increase the success
and prosperity of their businesses. Feng Shui is widely used
today in Asia and in many other parts of the world.
The main tools used in traditional Feng Shui analyses are a
Luopan Compass and the Bagua. In modern Feng Shui, the
Luopan Compass has been replaced by a regular compass
because the Luopan is complex, hard to master, and very
expensive to purchase.
The Bagua or Feng Shui map is an octagon which is divided in
nine different areas, it contains the symbols of the I-ching, the
ancient Chinese oracle on which Feng Shui is rooted. Each area
corresponds to the nine main areas of our lives. This map helps
us to pinpoint the position of each one of those areas in the
space we are assessing.
The black hat sect school of Feng Shui, which began in the
1960s, explains Feng Shui as the placement of objects within a
space to obtain an ideal flow of Chi.
Our well-being, health, relationships, careers, behavior and
our wealth, are all affected in a certain way by the “energies” that
flow in the environment which surrounds us both at home, and at
work. Therefore, by learning how to properly adjust and arrange
our living and working space to create a pleasant and balance
environment, we can improve specific areas of our lives. With
proper adjustment comes the possibility of better health,
productivity, wealth, and harmonious relationships.
Since Feng Shui has become mainstream it is practiced widely in
private homes and offices all around the world. But, as in the
Western World, Feng Shui has been modified and simplified and
has little in common with authentic Asian Feng Shui.
